The Best Snorkel Spots on Maui for Beginners

# The Best Snorkel Spots on Maui for Beginners

Maui is one of the best places on earth to learn to snorkel. The water is warm, the visibility is often excellent, and at the right beaches you can float over coral gardens full of fish within a few kicks of shore. No boat required. But not every beach is a beginner beach, and picking the wrong one can turn a magical morning into a stressful one. Here are the spots we send first-timers to.

## The Golden Rules First

**Go in the morning.** This is the single biggest tip. Maui's waters are calmest before about 11 a.m. After that the trade winds pick up, the surface gets choppy, and visibility drops. Set the alarm. You will be back at the hotel pool by lunch.

**Never stand on coral.** Coral is a living animal and it breaks easily. If you need to rest, float. If you need to stand, find sand. This matters everywhere, but especially at the reefs below.

**Give turtles space.** Hawaiian green sea turtles, honu, are everywhere here. Federal law says stay at least 10 feet away. They are calm and curious, and watching one glide past you is a core Maui memory. Let it come to you.

## The Spots

### Kapalua Bay

The classic beginner beach, and for good reason. The bay is sheltered on both sides, the entry is sandy and gentle, and the coral sits in calm, shallow water on the left and right edges of the bay. Fish are abundant and the water is usually crystal clear in the morning. There is shade, restrooms, and a rinse shower. It gets busy, so arrive before 9.

### Napili Bay

Just south of Kapalua, Napili is a soft, sandy crescent with easy entry and good snorkeling along the rocky points on either end. It is a little quieter and more neighborhood-feeling than Kapalua. The reef on the north end is the better of the two. Watch for the occasional surf pushing in; if the waves look bigger than you are comfortable with, pick another day.

### Black Rock (Kaanapali)

The point at the north end of Kaanapali Beach, in front of the Sheraton, drops into deep, clear water with tons of fish and frequent turtle sightings. It is beautiful, but it is a step up from Kapalua and Napili. The entry can have surge, the water gets deep fast, and there is a cliff-jumping spot that draws a crowd. Confident beginners only, and go with a buddy.

### Ulua Beach, Wailea

On the south shore, Ulua is the Wailea equivalent of Kapalua Bay: a protected little beach with a sandy entry and healthy reef on both sides. The marine life here is excellent, and the beach park has restrooms and showers. South Maui mornings are reliably calm. Another arrive-early spot, since the parking lot is small.

### Honolua Bay (Summer Only)

Honolua is a marine reserve with some of the best snorkeling on the island, a protected cove full of coral and fish. But it is strictly a summer spot. In winter, the north swells turn it into a surf break and snorkeling becomes dangerous. Check the surf forecast before you go, and if there is any doubt, skip it. The entry is rocky, so water shoes help.

## What to Bring

You can rent gear at any beach shop, but a mask that actually fits your face makes all the difference. If you snorkel more than once on your trip, consider buying a decent mask and keeping it. Fins help but are optional at the calm bays. A rash guard does double duty: sun protection and a little warmth. And reef-safe sunscreen on everything the rash guard does not cover, applied before you get in the water.

## Before You Hit the Water

Mornings are short and the good parking goes fast, so lay out your gear the night before. And swing by the shop for our sun care and waterproof picks: reef-safe sunscreen that stays on in the water, rash guards, dry bags for the boat days, and after-sun care for the spots you missed. Everything is chosen by people who snorkel these exact bays.
